When you have a job to do in Cincinnati, Newport, or Covington, you need a truck that works as hard as you-which is pretty clear.
What's not so clear is exactly which truck has the right stuff for tackling tough terrain and hauling heavy equipment. To find out, Fuller Ford Cincinnati compared the Ford F-150 vs. the Ram 1500.
Towing and Torque
When you have heavy weight to pull, both the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 can manage over five tons. In fact, the Ram 1500 can pull a maximum of 12,750 pounds behind it with the right trailering and engine options.
The Ford F-150, however, is a little bit stronger. It boasts a maximum towing capacity of 13,200 pounds when properly equipped. This may be because of the torque capabilities in the available engines.
While both pickups give you the ability to customize your power with multiple engine options, you'll get more choices with the F-150. It has six available engines, compared to only three for the Ram 1500.
When it comes to power, the available 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 engine in the Ford F-150 offers a maximum torque output of 470 lb-ft. The available 5.7L HEMI® V8 of the Ram 1500 can only generate a maximum torque of 410 lb-ft-so, it's clear the Ford F-150 is the stronger pick.
Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500: Payload and Curb Weight
In addition to what you can pull behind you, both trucks can carry a lot on their backs. You'll get more options with the F-150, however. It gives you three box lengths to choose from, whereas the Ram 1500 only gives you two.
In terms of sheer volume, neither truck bed requires you to pack light. The largest bed option in the Ram 1500 can accommodate 61.5 cubic feet of cargo. The Ford F-150 lets you fill it up a bit more with 77.4 cubic feet of space.
It turns out that's a good thing, too, since the F-150 can carry up to 3,270 pounds in its cargo bed, while the Ram 1500 can only manage a maximum payload of 2,300 pounds.
Both trucks, however, give you ease of access with their available power-release tailgates. They even offer available bed steps to make climbing in and out a breeze.
Handling and Trailer Control
As the day comes to a close, both the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 include available features that simplify the process of docking, even when towing a 5-ton load.
Both trucks offer available front and rear parking sensors that alert you if you're getting too close to another object. They both also include a standard rearview camera for improved visibility when backing up. There are even available blind spot monitoring systems, which are extended to cover your trailer, too!
Only the F-150, however, offers an available Pro Trailer Backup Assistâ„¢ feature for additional trailering control. This system keeps the trailer steady and headed in the intended direction. All you have to do is turn a knob on the dashboard, then watch as the trailer follows suit.
Without this kind of smart towing technology, drivers in the Ram 1500 may have less control over their haul.
