Explorer Engine Specifications
There are three engine options for the 2020 Explorer, and each one is designed for varied configurations to fit your towing needs. Standard in the Ford Explorer is a 2.3L EcoBoost® engine, which produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. All 2020 models come standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift®, which makes accelerating extremely efficient and smooth.
The most powerful engine option is the 3.0L EcoBoost® V6. This engine puts out 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, making it perfect for those winding inclines. There's also the eco-friendly available 3.3L hybrid engine that pumps out 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque.
Ford Explorer Towing Package
The 2020 Ford Explorer has a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 pounds when properly equipped. This is achieved when equipped with the available 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine. With the standard 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4, the 2020 Ford Explorer is able to tow up to 5,300 pounds. Even with the fuel-efficient hybrid engine option, the Explorer has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

What also helps you achieve strong towing capabilities in the Ford Explorer is the Class III Trailer Tow Package, which comes standard with the 3.0L EcoBoost® engine and is available with the 2.3L EcoBoost® and 3.3L hybrid engines. With this, you get a Class III frame-mounted hitch, trailer connectors, cargo management system, and engine oil cooler.

This system allows you to take control and seamlessly switch between multiple driving modes, like tow/haul mode, which makes the Explorer prepared for any of the road conditions above. Designed with heavy payloads in mind, Ford has the available Hill Descent Controlâ„¢. With Hill Descent Controlâ„¢, you'll be able to descend any road as the braking system automatically engages as needed while on steeper grades.
