Explorer Engine Specifications

There are three engine options for the 2019 Explorer, and each one is designed for varied configurations to fit your towing needs. Standard in the Base and XLT models is a 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 engine, which produces 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. All 2019 models come standard with a 6-speed SelectShift® Automatic transmission, allowing you to switch from a conventional automatic shifting mode to a more driver-variable semi-automatic shifting Sport mode.

Standard in the Limited model and available in the Base and XLT trims is Ford's 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4. This engine puts out 280 horsepower and torque is increased to 310 lb-ft-perfect for those winding inclines. The equipped engine in both the Sport and Platinum trims is a 3.5L Twin Turbocharged Direct Injection EcoBoost® V6 engine that pumps out 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Ford Explorer Towing Packages

  • The 2019 Ford Explorer has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. To accommodate varied towing capacities, Ford offers two tow packages for the 2019 Explorer depending on what configuration you decide to take home. The Class II Trailer Tow package can haul up to 3,000 pounds and requires the 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine with 4WD.
  • A Class III Trailer Tow Package will grant you more freedom to tow larger trailers when properly equipped-up to the aforementioned maximum of 5,000 pounds. The package also includes a Class III frame-mounted hitch, four- and seven-pin trailer connectors, and engine oil cooler. This tow package comes standard with the 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 engine.

Ford Explorer Hauling & Driving Technology

Ford's suite of driver-assistive features is there to cover your blind spots and give you confidence in your drive-regardless of the distance. The 2019 Explorer has an available Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System™, so you won't be worrying about what you're towing behind you, whether you decide to take the Explorer through gravel, mud, ruts, grass, or snow. This system allows you to take control and seamlessly switch between four terrain settings prepared for any of the road conditions above.

Designed with heavy payloads in mind, Ford's standard Hill Start Assist and available Hill Descent Control™ helps to keep your vehicle's power and handling within grasp. When you're stopped on an incline, the standard Hill Start Assist automatically puts the anti-lock brakes into use to hold your Explorer in place for up to two seconds while you shift from the brake to the accelerator.

With Hill Descent Control™ activated, you'll be able to descend any road as the braking system automatically engages as needed while on steeper grades.
