The spacious, 7-passenger Ford Explorer is built to take you and your family wherever you'd like to go. It also does a great job at conserving fuel while you cruise around Cincinnati, OH; Newport, KY; and Covington, KY.

Our team at Fuller Ford wanted to take a closer look at the specs of this SUV to see just how good the Ford Explorer gas mileage is.

Three Engine Options

Engine Horsepower / Torque
 3.3L Hybrid  318 horsepower / 322 lb-ft of torque
 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4  300 horsepower / 310 lb-ft of torque
 3.0L EcoBoost® V6  400 horsepower / 415 lb-ft of torque

The MPG of the Ford Explorer varies depending on the engine that's powering the vehicle. It comes standard with a 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine that produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. If you need more power or more efficiency, you can opt for one of two available engines.

The available 3.3L Hybrid engine creates 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque. The available 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine supplies the Explorer with 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is matched with the 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission. The available EcoBoost® V6 engine also comes standard with Intelligent 4-wheel drive (4WD), which is also optional with the other two engines.

Fuel Economy of the Ford Explorer

Engine Gas Mileage
 3.3L Hybrid EPA-estimated 27 city/29 highway MPG
 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 EPA-estimated 21 city/28 highway MPG
 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 EPA-estimated 18 city/24 highway MPG

When equipped with its standard 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine, the Ford Explorer achieves an EPA-estimated 21 city/28 highway MPG. The available 3.3L Hybrid engine does even better-it boasts an EPA-estimated 27 city/29 highway MPG. To help maximize your fuel economy, these engines are paired with a fuel tank that can hold 17.9 and 18 gallons of gas, respectively.

Even with the more powerful 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine, the Explorer can provide you with an efficient ride. It manages an EPA-estimated 18 city/24 highway MPG. To help you stop even less frequently to refuel, the 3.0L engine comes with a large fuel tank that can hold 20.2 gallons of gas.

Other Capacities

Now that we've seen just how far you can go with the Ford Explorer MPG, we also wanted to highlight other aspects of its design and engineering that make it a well-rounded SUV.

If you're planning on hauling your boat to the lake or taking out the camper for a long weekend, the Explorer has a towing capacity of up to 5,600 pounds when properly equipped. It comes standard with Trailer Sway Control, which will help maintain stability, so you can tow with confidence.

Inside, there's plenty of space for you, your passengers, and cargo. There's 152.7 cubic feet of passenger volume in the Explorer. That gives all seven passengers a spacious and comfortable ride. Then, behind the third-row seats, there's 18.2 cubic feet of cargo volume to use. If you lower the rear seats, you'll have 87.8 cubic feet of cargo volume to fill up.
