As a commercial Ford truck dealership serving Cincinnati, OH, Newport, OH, and Covington, KY, our team at Fuller Ford knows that towing capacity is one of the most important aspects of any commercial truck. So, we know you may be wondering what the Ford F-550 is capable of hauling.

The 2020 Ford F-550 has a conventional towing capacity of 18,500 pounds, and there's a lot that goes on under the hood making that possible. To take an in-depth look at the towing capabilities of the Ford F-550, read our guide below.

Ford F-550 Towing Capabilities

The towing power of the Ford F-550 comes from the engine. Its standard 7.3L 2-Valve PFI V8 gas engine generates 350 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. It's partnered with the TorqShift® 10-speed automatic transmission. Together, they can tow up to 18,500 pounds of conventional trailer weight, and 24,100 pounds with a gooseneck or 5th-wheel trailer.

If you want the hauling strength of diesel, opt for the available 6.7L Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel engine. It generates 330 horsepower and 825 lb-ft of torque. It also works with the TorqShift® 10-speed automatic transmission. When equipped in a Regular Cab, it has the same maximum towing capacity as the previous configuration.

When you're hauling gear that doesn't require a trailer, the payload of the F-550 will depend on the available payload package you select. You'll have a maximum payload of 12,750 pounds when you opt for the Payload Plus Upgrade Package and a 169-inch wheelbase.

Ford F-550 Towing Technologies

The 2020 Ford F-550 couples its towing capacity with innovative technology, so it has both brawn and brains. For starters, there's the Selectable Drive Modes that come standard with the TorqShift® 10-speed automatic transmission. You'll have four modes to choose from, including Tow/Haul, which optimizes shift points for a smoother hauling experience.

There's also Trailer Sway Control. This standard system can detect shifts in trailer weight-and, when it does, it can brake individual wheels and adjust the engine output to keep you in total command of your haul.

Finally, there's the available Integrated Trailer Brake Controller. If your trailer is equipped with brakes, this feature lets you seamlessly sync them with the brakes of the Ford F-550. That means you'll have all the stopping power you need.

Other Jobsite Advantages

To go along with its towing capacity, the Ford F-550 also comes with a wide array of features that will make it easier to tackle any job that comes your way.

If you opt for the available diesel engine, the F-550 will also come with a Live Drive Power Takeoff Provision, which includes Mobile and Stationary PTO Modes. It will come in handy when you're powering a dump truck provision or a water pump. It can even power such auxiliary equipment as a woodchipper.

The F-550 can also be equipped with Ford Telematics™. It will give you service reminders, track fuel levels, and even monitor the location of your fleet vehicles with GPS tracking. That means you'll be able to optimize the power-and cost-effectiveness-of your business.
