After its introduction in 1991, the Ford Explorer continued to improve, quickly making it one of the most popular vehicles in the country. Its rugged, truck-like appeal worked for many drivers, but following the new wave of crossover-style SUVs, the Explorer experienced another makeover in 2011 to maintain its competitive edge.

Now, the Explorer combines its original truck-like capability with improved comfort, space, and technology, making it a better all-around option for crossover shoppers. 2011 Ford Explorer

2011 was the year of major changes for the Explorer. Abandoning the previous body-on-frame construction, new Explorer models adopted a unibody construction that's common among crossovers. This not only improved handling and maneuverability-it also improved safety ratings, helping the Explorer earn the 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Plenty of exciting features debuted during this model year as well, such as brake pre-charging, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, and an infotainment system. Voice recognition, a dual-touchscreen 4.2-inch display, and navigation are some of the highlights of this earlier system, expanding the Explorer's entertainment possibilities.

2013-2015 Ford Explorer

Following the success of the fifth generation, the new lineup for the 2013 Explorer included a new engine option and new performance-minded trim level. For the first time, drivers could experience a sporty Explorer that still had all the practical features they were looking for.

From that point on, the Explorer experienced continuous improvements each year. Some highlights from these model years include Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist for added safety; heated and cooled seats and power-adjustable pedals for added convenience; and a new appearance package for aesthetic appeal.

2016 Ford Explorer

Coming off a recent refresh, the 2016 Explorer received some modern styling, a redesigned grille that improves engine cooling, and a more powerful 4-cylinder EcoBoost® engine that comes in all-wheel drive.

The range-topping Platinum trim was also added to the lineup this year, adding more luxury than any model before it. Massaging seats, a hands-free power liftgate, and genuine-wood cabin accents enhanced the comfort, appearance, and refinement of the Explorer, on top of all the other performance and technology features it introduced.

2017-2018 Ford Explorer

The 2017 and 2018 Ford Explorer model years brought only minor updates and changes, such as an improved SYNC® 3 infotainment interface with enhanced voice-recognition technology, easier usability, and a wider variety of available apps. Smartphone gestures and a built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot were also added, making the system easier to use than ever.

2019 Ford Explorer

Although it's still part of the fifth generation, the 2019 Explorer experienced some more updates and subtle tweaks. Highlights include a few new packages for the trim levels, more available advanced safety technology, and a power tailgate as standard equipment for lower trim levels. Overall, the 2019 Explorer carries over the best attributes of the previous model years combined with the most popular features for modern drivers.
