2019 Ford Explorer Review

Like its predecessor, the 2019 Ford Explorer combines utility with a family-friendly persona that makes for a practical, well-rounded vehicle. Regardless of what you're looking for in a 3-row crossover SUV, there's a version of the Explorer that can suit your needs.

Drivers in Cincinnati, Newport, and Covington can learn more about what's to come for the 2019 Ford Explorer with our comprehensive model review.

Performance

The base engine for the Explorer is a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. Two more uprated options are available: a 2.3-liter turbo-4 with 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, and a twin-turbo V-6, which uses its 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. This twin-turbo engine turns the Explorer into a fun and exciting drive. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is offered as an option. While this is suitable for light off-roading, many drivers will appreciate its exceptional surefootedness on slippery or snow-covered pavement.

Though it rides a bit like a small minivan, which improves the interior space, it still handles like its predecessor. The direct, accurate steering and minimal body lean provide additional confidence on the road, and the specialized suspension cancels out any road imperfections for a comfortable ride. Properly equipped, the Explorer is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Interior Comfort and Space

Power-adjustable seating and high-quality cloth upholstery offer plenty of comfort for Explorer passengers, with heavily contoured seating that provides long-distance support. All rows have ample headroom and legroom, even in the rear, which is usually only suitable for children. Comfort upgrades like leather upholstery, massaging front seats and second-row captain's chairs turn the interior into near luxury.

With the seats upright, the Explorer has 21 cubic feet of cargo space and 39.2 cubic feet of space when the third row is folded. With all rows folded, the space opens to 73 cubic feet with a low load floor and no obstructions. This is more than enough space to haul all your luggage and gear.

Technology

The 2019 Ford Explorer is remarkably well equipped, even at base level. The highlight is the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, which includes a built-in Waze app for navigation and community-based traffic information. This system is regarded as one of the best on the market, thanks to its responsive touchscreen, intuitive menu options, wide array of third-party app compatibility, and quick navigation.

Plenty of advanced safety features are available as well, such as automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. It also uses a system that pre-charges the brakes when it detects a collision, which improves the braking distance and responsiveness in panic-braking situations.
