2018 Ford Explorer Review

When you need a versatile SUV for your treks around the greater Cincinnati area, the Ford Explorer has a lot to offer.

With three powerful engine options, strong trailering capabilities, and a roomy interior, it'll get you around the rough Newport terrain with ease.

To give drivers a better idea of how this SUV can benefit their drives through Covington and other surrounding areas, Fuller Ford put together this 2018 Ford Explorer Review.

2018 Ford Explorer: Performance Specs

The Explorer gives drivers their choice of three engines, each more powerful than the last.

The first is the standard 3.5L V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. If you need an extra boost, the available 2.3L EcoBoost® I4 engine offers a turbo kick, ramping up the torque production to 310 lb-ft and generating 280 horsepower.

The final option is the 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 Engine. This twin turbocharged engine packs a punch of 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Among the three engines, the Ford Explorer gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18-22 MPG combined.

Trailering and Traction Control in the Explorer

If you frequent the riverfront or need to trailer heavy loads, the trailering capabilities in the Ford Explorer don't back down to a challenge.

The torque production in the three engines, combined with an available 4-wheel-drive drivetrain, bumps this SUV's trailering abilities to 2,000-5,000 pounds with the Class III Trailer-Tow Package.

That's more than double the weight of the average pontoon boat, so if you're heading to the river this weekend, the Explorer has you more than covered.

While you're pulling the weight behind you, the standard Trailer Sway Control feature keeps you steady behind the wheel. You'll also have the added protection of standard Curve Control, which prevents rollover by automatically slowing you down if it senses you're entering a curve too quickly.

Ford Explorer Interior

When it comes time to load up some gear, you'll have more than enough space in the 2018 Explorer. This 3-row SUV offers 81.7 cubic feet of total cargo room with all three rows folded down.

You can easily access this space with the help of the PowerFold® third row seats that fold flat at the push of a button.

If you're bringing your whole crew along, you have a total passenger volume of 151.5 cubic feet and seats for seven. Even with a full car, there's still plenty of cargo space, with 21 cubic feet behind the third row and 43.9 behind the second.

As you cruise down the highway, the Explorer also offers the available SYNC® 3 voice-activated infotainment system, which allows you to connect your smartphone, access navigation, stream music, and make calls, all without taking your hands off the wheel.
